I enjoy reading the old Jalopnik articles by Freddy "Tavarish" Hernandez. You know, the "why by a new ____ when you can buy this used ____ supercar for the same price?!" articles. In particular, this one convinced me to buy a Boxster!

The comment section always annoyed me though. An internet full of people ready to warn of the associated high maintenance costs and impending engine disasters-- the no fun crowd.

To counter this sentiment I've recorded every dollar I've spent and cataloged it below!

A couple things to note-- I intentionally bought a 2009 and later car to avoid the dreaded IMS bearing issue. I also bought the car around 60,000 miles -- just about the time that a number of preventative maintenance projects are recommended, like a new water pump.

Except for the tires and the brake fluid flush these are all "do-it-yourself" prices. If you aren't mechanically inclined (and live in the greater Houston orbit) I highly recommend Rennsport Porsche Works in Sealy, Texas. The shop is like a car show and they literally have customers from across the country due to their reputation with rare/race air-cooled 911s.

To summarize, I bought the car for just over $31K, including taxes and dealer fees. In two and a half years I've spent around $2,500 on general maintenance (half of which was new tires, the rest oil, brake pads, filters, etc.). I spent $900 on major preventative maintenance projects like a water pump, plugs and coils, etc. $400 on specialty tools, like a diagnostic reader. And another $2,200 on totally unnecessary items like an exhaust, pedal covers, and a shift knob.

Oh, and with that glorious new exhaust note I get 18.3mpg -- the angels must be allowed to sing!

Table below, enjoy--
